The Atlantic Coast Route, that stretches from Scandinavia to Portugal, connects some of the most beautiful seascapes in the world, entering Spain through cultural routes such as the French Way of St. James, the Canal de Castilla, the Ruta del Duero and the Vía de la Platar. The whole itinerary is a spectacle for the senses: spectacular fjords, sunny beaches, ports full of life, cities full of history through millenary roads, and some of the most representative examples of Romanesque and Gothic.

Fascinate with the impressive natural landscapes, including the virgin fjords of Norway and the magnificent cliffs, such as the one in Moher, in Ireland.

Visit the place where the Pilgrim Fathers left for the new world from Plymouth, United Kingdom. Practice French with local fishermen in the picturesque fishing villages located in La Vélodyssée, France.

Enjoy gastronomy and nightlife in some of the liveliest port cities in Europe, such as Bergen (Norway); Glasgow, Belfast, Bristol (United Kingdom); and Nantes (France), or in a university city World Heritage like Salamanca.

Put your cyclist skills to the test by pedaling through the Spanish Pyrenees before rewarding yourself with some tasty tapas in the towns of La Rioja or Castile y Leon, accompanied by designation of origin wines.

Venture through Historic Trails, following the paths followed by pilgrims in the Middle Ages, through the Way of St. James and the Via de la Plata.

Give your legs a rest and end your trip by relaxing on some of the beaches in southern Portugal.

The Departament of Culture and Tourism of the Junta of Castile y Leon is working on the incorporation into the FEDER project of conditioning and promotion of the EuroVelo 1 route, called the Atlantic Coast Route, from North Cape (Norway) to Sagres (Portugal) ), of 8.168 Km.

In this project, 19 members from 6 different countries are involved: Norway, Belgium, France, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, and 5 regions as Navarre, La Rioja, Castile y Leon, Extremadura and Andalusia, and the association Red de Cooperación de Ciudades en la Ruta de la Plata.

With the participation of the regional government of Castile y Leon, it is intended to obtain European support for the promotion of 4 important tourist resources of the region as it passes through EuroVelo 1, such as the French Way of Saint James, the Canal de Castilla, the Ruta del Duero and the Vía de la Plata, which combine historical-artistic heritage, industrial heritage, enogastronomy and natural resources, as well as an important offer of active and adventure tourism.

1 WAY OF  SAINT JAMES

The Way of Saint James by bicycle is one of the routes that every cyclotourist has to do at least once in his life. The EuroVelo 1 route runs along the French Way of Saint James on its way through Castille y Leon from Redecilla del Camino (Burgos) to Boadilla del Camino (Palencia).

The so-called French Way is the Saint James Waypar excellence, the most well-known, well-traveled and best-conditioned itinerary of all. The Saint James Way or the Jacobean Route, as it is also known, was declared the First European Route of Cultural Interest by the Council of Europe in 1987.

In addition, the route is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The French Way of Saint James is a route of faith, art and culture; a world in which nature is continually present; a spiritual adventure, finding oneself; along this route or its surroundings are still located the main landmarks or centers of the Romanesque and Gothic that today represent an authentic rosary of works of art.

2 CANAL DE CASTILLA

The Canal de Castilla, an impressive work of hydraulic engineering, was one of the best projects of this type that was built in Spain throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Declared an Goods of Cultural Interest, it will awaken your interest as one of the most attractive tourist routes in Castile y Leon, due to the natural and scenic richness and the historical and artistic value of their towns.

Cycling at the shore of the Canal de Castilla from Boadilla del Camino (Palencia) to Valladolid, discover the locks through which the barges raffled the unevenness of the land, runs through attractive landscapes with Romanesque churches, visit the old flour factories, cross the rivers of Castile y Leon …

3 RUTA DEL DUERO

The Ruta del Duero is one of the most important cultural axis of southern Europe. A axis that split in two the Community and that allows enjoying a tourist offer of nature, art, and gastronomy.

In Castile y Leon, EuroVelo 1 travels 13 towns along the Ruta del Duero, from Simancas (Valladolid) to Zamora.

Its route allows the traveler to cross natural spaces created by the natural action of the course of the river, turned into environmental and faunal reserves of great importance. At the same time, the Duero waters the vineyards of the most famous wine regions of southern Europe and is the ideal setting for water tourism activities and others, such as bird watching as it passes through the lagoons.

Also, the Río Duero has a great cultural interest, which became a frontier line in the Reconquest, and that even today we can go through its historical artistic ensembles, and know a good number of castles and great monasteries.

4 RUTA DE LA PLATA

The EuroVelo 1, on its way through Castilla y León, crosses the stretch of the Vía de la Plata Route from Zamora to the Puerto de Béjar (Salamanca), through this route it is possible to know the main civilizations and periods of the History of Spain : Roman, Arabic, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque … In the Sierra de Béjar a unique Roman road is preserved in Spain due to its length and good condition.

A great geographical space full of natural landscapes and some of the most beautiful and emblematic historical cities of our Region on a path marked by milestones, carved stonework columns about two meters high, where there are inscriptions that allude to the emperor and miles that separate the distance of the route.
